10 Horror Movies That Weren't What Anyone Expected

9. Dog Soldiers

If you stumbled across Neil Marshall's werewolf film Dog Soldiers on a streaming service or in a rental shop back in the day, the poster probably led you to expect a straight-up, largely serious action-horror flick.

But Marshall's movie is actually a horror-comedy, packed with hilarious banter between its squaddie protagonists and outrageously over-the-top gore that's regularly played for laughs. That is to say, you'll probably never look at sausages quite the same way again.

In addition to being endlessly quotable and gut-bustingly funny (pardon the pun), it also wears its low-budget charm on its sleeve, and yet still manages to be a genuinely effective and intense werewolf movie.

That Neil Marshall managed to pull all of this together into a coherent whole is shocking, frankly. He was able to have his cake and eat it by subverting what the audience expected and still giving them a kickass, unforgettable entry into the werewolf subgenre that's had few equals since.
