10 Horror Movies That Weren't What Anyone Expected
5. Kill List
The marketing for Ben Wheatley's superb Kill List barely made it look like a horror film at all, opting to instead present it as a thriller about two assassins who get in over their heads.
The trailers did hint at some sort of genre-shifting twist, with glimpses of hitmen Jay (Neil Maskell) and Gal (Michael Smiley) shooting at something unseen - perhaps a monster of some kind - but Kill List is actually a brilliant folk horror in disguise.
Though the bulk of the story focuses on the pair going about their various killing assignments, an air of unease slowly permeates through the movie, especially as some of their targets seem strangely at peace with being offed.
This leads to a third act where it's revealed that Jay and Gal have unknowingly been part of a cult's ritual, and though plenty is left chillingly ambiguous as the end credits roll, it's a far leap from what initially seemed to be a pretty simple hitman thriller.
