Released digitally in 2024 and playing at a 36-hour horror marathon at Unnamed Footage Festival, The Girl in Yellow centres around college student Aspen (Celeste Orozco), whose life is turned into a living nightmare when she stumbles upon an eerie painting of a girl wearing a yellow raincoat.

The feature debut from writer-director Azron Shai, this underseen, low-budget outing draws inspiration from The Blair Witch Project. Not only does its cinéma-vérité style present something that feels authentic, but it also frames itself as a true story based on the legend of a supposedly real, cursed painting with a long and sinister history.

After Aspen displays the portrait in her bedroom, she's subsequently tormented by a malicious spirit during the following nights. Meanwhile, paranormal investigators played by Miyuki Mori and Marcella Raya attempt to uncover what happened to her.

Despite its modest production value, Shai makes excellent use of sound design and visual effects to deliver a constantly unnerving atmosphere that's punctuated with unexpected scares.

The Girl in Yellow is the kind of film that knows exactly what it wants to be. It's the definition of a hidden gem that viewers should seek out.
