10 Recent Horror Movies That Didn't Deserve To Bomb
9. Heart Eyes
Heart Eyes may not be perfect, but it gets a lot of points for originality, for taking the prototypical slasher movie formula and stapling it to a genuinely charming rom-com.
With solid marketing and a release date the week before Valentine's Day, it seemed like horror fans and couples craving some edgy counter-programming would propel this one to easy success. The fact that it cost only $18 million and was well-received by critics sure didn't hurt. Though the film opened above expectations and did solid business on V-Day weekend, it fell off a cliff soon thereafter, ending its run with a mediocre $33.1 million - not quite double its cost, which is typically the break-even point for a lower-budget movie like this.
The big problem here is that, for whatever reason, Heart Eyes just didn't connect internationally, with more than 90% of its box office coming from North America alone.
At least it most likely performed well on streaming, even if that might not be enough for a sequel to get the go-ahead.
