House of the Dead is one of the worst horror movies ever made and it might seem odd to suggest that such a braindead excuse of a film could provoke any sort-of thought. But yes, it will. Firstly, viewers will be awestruck at just how incompetent it is in every conceivable way and secondly, it's got an ending that's presented as happy but is in fact anything but.

In Uwe Boll's loose video game adaptation, a group of youngsters go to attend an island rave but quickly find themselves under attack from the undead, which are eventually revealed to be the result of twisted experiments by a 15-century Spanish priest named Castillo Sermano, who successfully created an immortality serum.

Protagonist Rudy (Johnathan Cherry) and his ex-girlfriend Alicia (Ona Grauer) eventually defeat the still-alive Sermano (David Palffy), but Alicia seemingly dies... only to be shown leaving the island with Rudy at the end. While some might've initially assumed this was just another example of the movie's bad editing, the closing narration reveals that Rudy brought her back to life with the serum.

Well, this is probably a decision they both regretted. As countless stories have shown over the years, immortality is a curse that causes untold misery. In a recent episode of Amazon's superhero masterpiece The Boys, a character explained her decision not to take a drug that'd make her immortal: "Summer is only beautiful when you know winter is coming." That sums it up.
