15 More Horror Movie Endings That Get Worse The More You Think About It
12. The Killing Of A Sacred Deer - The Family Is Broken
Many modern horror movies, especially legacy sequels, obsess over the trauma of their main characters and while some viewers might find this trope a bit overdone, it's actually entirely believable. At the end of the day, the characters who survive this horror stories are going to be left with lifelong PTSD.
Having said this, few horror movie groups will be worse off than the family of Steven Murphy, who suffer a terrible fate in Yorgos Lanthimos' wonderful The Killing of a Sacred Deer.
In this absurdist horror tragedy, Steven (Colin Farrell) is a surgeon who meets Martin Lang (Barry Keoghan), a mysterious teenager whose father Steven failed to save during an operation a few years earlier. A vengeful Martin places a curse on Steven's family.
His wife Anna (Nicole Kidman) and his children Kim and Bob (Raffey Cassidy and Sunny Suljic) have been struck by a wasting disease that will kill all three... unless Steven kills a member of his family first. Despite his best efforts, he's unable to avoid making this horrendous choice and eventually kills Bob through a randomized shooting.
Quite frankly, all three of them might've wished they'd died instead. Alongside the terrible grief of Bob's death, their relationships would be forever-tarnished, as all three of the cursed family members had tried to persuade Steven to spare them and kill one of the others. It's unlikely this group stayed together for long, put it that way.
Oh, and Martin got away with absolutely everything.
