20 Horror Movie Scenes That Make Absolutely No Sense

16. Bride Of Chucky - The Amulet Retcon

Final Destination 3 Mary Elizabeth Winstead
Universal

Plot: Chucky (Brad Dourif) and his girlfriend Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly), who's now a doll as well, travel to New Jersey, hoping to retrieve an amulet that will allow them to transfer their souls into human bodies.

The Child's Play movies have never exactly been stellar when it comes to their plots, but even taking that into account, a certain scene in 1998's Bride of Chucky represents a Rise of Skywalker-sized retcon.

The two killer dolls are planning to possess Tiffany's neighbour Jesse (Nick Stabile) and his girlfriend Jade (a pre-fame Katherine Heigl), and they trick Jesse into taking them (in their doll forms) to New Jersey for $1,000. Chucky claims that they need an amulet called the Heart of Damballa to transfer their souls, and he also claims that it was buried with his corpse, as he was wearing it the night he was gunned down in the 1988 original.

Err, no, he wasn't.

Watching the first movie back, there's no amulet in sight. Furthermore, he never claimed to have needed some magical MacGuffin to do the transfer in any of the previous movies. Even if Bride is arguably the best Chucky film to date, this moment remains distracting. This was in the pre-Internet days, so maybe they hoped viewers wouldn't notice such a blatant rewriting of franchise mythology.
