20 Horror Movies That Fall Apart In The Final Act

Hollywood remakes of foreign-language movies are usually a terrible idea, and one of the biggest problems is how such remakes tend to sanitize the darker elements of the original films. Some stories from overseas contain material that wouldn't fly in a studio flick, which is yet another indicator that it's better just to leave such properties alone and come up with something original instead.

Hollywood being Hollywood, such remakes are still churned out regardless, and, in predictable fashion, 2024's Speak No Evil remake rewrote the ending of the story to give it a happier conclusion. Both stories revolve around a family of three going to stay with a family they met on holiday, and despite the aberrant behaviour of their hosts, they're too frightened of offending them to actually stand up for themselves.

The original movie, a Danish production, was designed by director Christian Tafdrup to be a satire of excessive politeness. In this particular case, the fear of offending anyone leads to the main couple being murdered by their hosts while their daughter is taken captive by them. It's a nasty ending, but it absolutely works as a conveyor of this thematic message.

Unfortunately, 2024's version sees the heroic couple overpower their tormenters in a generic shoot-em-up finale, and this totally missed the point of the entire story. The rest of this remake is actually really solid, so this was a frustrating waste of potential.
