20 Horror Movies That Fall Apart In The Final Act

8. Escape Room: Tournament Of Champions (Theatrical Cut)

This is an interesting case, as two different versions of Escape Room: Tournament of Champions exist. One version has an entertaining final act with some solid twists. The other, in stark contrast, doesn't just ruin this film, but it also ruins the previous film.

Sadly, and inexplicably, it was the latter version that was sent to cinemas.

In the theatrical cut, all of the competitors in this new game are apparently eliminated until only Zoey (Taylor Russell) is left alive. She finds herself in a child's bedroom and discovers... Amanda (Deborah Ann Woll), one of the players in the original film who'd apparently died in the games. Amanda reveals that she's been blackmailed into designing the escape rooms for this new game and that the organisation now wants Zoey to be their next architect.

What a bloody awful twist. There was absolutely no reason to bring Amanda back, and doing so fatally undermined any semblance of stakes. In fact, Amanda literally says out loud, "If you didn't see it, it didn't happen," just before it turns out that Ben (Logan Miller), the secondary lead, is still alive. Well, there goes any sense of jeopardy.

And then, after the trio manages to escape, we get a bafflingly silly ending where it turns out that the passenger plane Zoey and Ben are on has, somehow, been turned into an escape room. It's no surprise that the series never continued, for there was no coming back from this.
