20 Horror Movies That Fall Apart In The Final Act
5. Signs
Ever since he blew up with 1999's The Sixth Sense, M. Night Shyamalan has been widely associated with his twist endings. Has this been a good thing for him? Not really.
First up, there is so much more to this inconsistent yet fascinating and over-hated auteur, and worse still, many of his plot twists aren't necessarily all that great. Because he's known as the twist guy, there's an expectation that he has to throw in a plot twist even if said twist completely upends the entire film. That's definitely what happened with Signs.
While there's plenty to love about Shyamalan's alien invasion flick, it's easy to see why it's been so divisive over the years. The big reveals in the third act are questionable to say the least. First up, it turns out that the alien antagonists are susceptible to water... which makes them far too easy to defeat as they have just arrived on a planet that's 70% water.
Secondly, the main twist revolves around a divine intervention saving the main family from a lone alien that breaks into their farmhouse, thus allowing protagonist Graham (Mel Gibson) to regain his faith. Specifically, Graham recalls the death of his wife and her dying words; she said, "Tell Merrill to swing away," and Graham tells his brother Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix) to attack the alien attacker with his baseball bat.
But why did a woman have to die just to inspire someone to use a baseball to attack an intruder?
