20 Horror Movies That Fall Apart In The Final Act
4. Sunshine
Sunshine is a huge outlier on this list, as it doesn't actually start out as a horror film. It does, however, turn into one in the final stretch, and a very terrible one at that.
It starts out as a gripping sci-fi thriller about a crew trying to reignite the dying sun before devolving into a bland, silly slasher flick. Out of nowhere, it turns out that Pinbacker (a wasted Mark Strong), the now-insane surviving captain from an earlier mission to the sun, has snuck onboard their ship and goes on the rampage. It might've worked had the threat of Pinbacker been built up, but here, he was suddenly thrown in and it was jarring as all hell.
It genuinely feels like the real third act of Sunshine was cut out and the ending reels from a different, vastly inferior movie were thrown in instead, making for a viewing experience that's jarring in the extreme. Watching such a promising film collapse into stupidity right before your eyes is a positively painful experience, and this remains a deserving poster child for potentially great movies killed by a terrible ending.
