20 Horror Movies That Fall Apart In The Final Act

3. Insidious

Insidious is an important horror flick. It cemented James Wan as one of the industry's most talented horror directors, it helped to put Blumhouse Productions on the map, and crucially, in what was a pretty rough time for the horror genre, it was the rare studio horror flick that was actually, you know, really bloody good, not to mention incredibly scary. Who didn't jump out of their seats when that red demon appeared behind Patrick Wilson?

Nonetheless, for all of Insidious' many, many strengths, it dovetails in the final act, as protagonist Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson) enters a spirit realm called the Further in order to rescue his son, Dalton (Ty Simpkins). In contrast to the sections set in the physical world, this part of the movie is considerably less scary and not nearly as interesting. As for that previously terrifying red demon, once we actually meet him properly, he looks more like a risible Darth Maul cosplayer than anything else, and he and Josh proceed to have a rather silly fight scene.

Once Josh and Dalton return to the living, the movie bounces back to an extent with a bruising cliffhanger ending that reaffirms Insidious as one of the very first great horror films of the 2010s, flaws and all. Still, it's a shame all of that awesomeness in the earlier parts couldn't have been sustained all the way through.
