Though Hollywood is all-in on video games right now, it's also fair to say that some video games don't really have much business becoming movies.

And Hollywood already tried to make fetch happen with Sega's legendary light-gun shooter The House of the Dead, with 2003's Uwe Boll-directed effort being a critical and commercial failure. That didn't stop a direct-to-DVD sequel being released in 2005, though.

Yet in late 2024, it was announced that Sega was taking another crack at it, with Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil) set to write, direct, and produce a new House of the Dead movie. The script will be based on the third game in the series and star The Last of Us' Isabela Merced, and while this all sounds like an undeniable step up from Boll's disastrous early-aughts movie, Anderson's extremely shaky track record speaks for itself.

Paul W.S. Anderson's last halfway good film was 2008's Death Race remake, and The House of the Dead is such a thin IP in terms of its story and characters that it's especially tough to see him doing much good with it.
