20 Upcoming Horror Movies That Could Save Franchises
7. Urban Legend Reboot
Urban Legend may not be one of the more acclaimed entries in the post-Scream late '90s slasher revival era, but it was a commercial success and remains a firm cult fave over 25 years later.
With its amusingly over-the-top premise, of a serial killer who models their slayings after urban legends in pop culture, the franchise potential was enormous. And yet, neither of the two sequels landed with nearly the same impact, after which the series evaporated into nothing.
Last April, it was announced that a reboot was in the works, with Shanrah Wakefield (Killer in Red) set to write the script while Gary Dauberman (Until Dawn) will produce. The interesting hook, however, is that this new take will examine urban legends "in the post-digital world."
Considering how communal storytelling has changed since the release of the original film - with creepypastas and viral social media posts in general - there's clearly plenty of room to deliver a contemporary riff on the original concept.
Here's hoping they pull it off in a way that makes Urban Legend the brand name IP it should've been the first time around.
