20 Upcoming Horror Movies That Could Save Franchises

19. The Mummy 4

The Mummy
Universal

The two Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz-starring Mummy movies were a bona fide pop culture phenomenon at the turn of the century, but since then, nobody seems to have any good idea what to do with the IP.

2007's threequel The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was widely panned, in large part because Weisz opted not to return, seemingly bringing this run of movies to an end. Universal then tried to reboot the property with 2017's Tom Cruise-starring blockbuster The Mummy, which was a critical failure and box office disappointment, enough that it also killed plans for a wider interconnected universe of monster movies.

But last November, it was confirmed that Ready or Not and Scream filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett were developing a direct sequel to the original Mummy trilogy, with Fraser, Weisz, and co-star John Hannah later confirmed to return.

The sequel is currently pencilled in for a May 19, 2028 release, and considering both the enduring nostalgia for the first two Mummy films and Fraser's recent career resurgence, this absolutely feels like the right time to get it done.

If The Mummy 4 is a success, don't be shocked if it kickstarts a whole new trilogy of Mummy movies.
