20 Upcoming Horror Movies That Could Save Franchises

14. Zach Cregger's Resident Evil

Though there's absolutely no arguing with the financial success of Paul W.S. Anderson's six Resident Evil movies, they remain contentious among fans of the video games due to how loosely they adapted the source material.

Somewhat ironically, 2021's reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City took a more faithful approach to translating the first two games, though it was both a critical and commercial failure because, well, it just wasn't very good.

But because Resident Evil is just too damn popular to stay quiet for long, a second reboot was announced in January 2025. And then came the bombshell: it would be co-written and directed by Barbarian and Weapons filmmaker Zach Cregger.

On paper, it seemed odd to think that Cregger, a fiercely original auteur in the horror space, would be remotely interested in working from an existing IP. But, in a move that might rankle some fans, Cregger has insisted that his feature won't feature any existing Resident Evil characters, but rather function as a standalone story set within the wider world of the games.

Cregger is just too damn good not to do something interesting with this, and regardless of whether he returns for potential sequels, he'll likely lay some firm foundations for future installments.
