10 Adult Rock Songs That No One Understood As Kids

1. Polly - Nirvana

Up until Nevermind, Nirvana were never known to be the most easygoing of bands whenever they went into the studio. Throughout the recording of Bleach, most of the songs had some form of edginess to their sound, which would soon get upended once they decided to perform unplugged towards the end of their run. Though the beginnings of more mellow material starts on Polly, this may be the most haunting song Kurt Cobain would ever write.

Despite painting himself in a pretty dour light on In Utero, Polly just feels like your average strum along song about a girl that we've seen done hundred of times. Given that you only have time to focus on the guitars though, Cobain's lyrics are actually taken from a real life story of a girl being captured and tortured after leaving a rock concert in the Washington area.

While always being the advocate for feminist rights, Cobain actually takes on the persona of the torturer in this song, as he seems oddly bemused to the heinous acts he's doing rather than relishing in it. Even when Polly manages to escape, he feels more apathetic than anything, which in it's own way might be more scary. Not only do you have no remorse for what you did, but the complete lack of emotion in what you're doing just speaks to the almost animalistic mindset that populates even the most average person.
