10 Artists That Will Not Defend Their Own Albums
4. David Bowie - David Bowie
Everything that surrounds David Bowie always come back to his outlandish image. Even without any music, the theatrical element of Bowie's work was so strong that you could barely take your eyes off him, from the alien like figure of Ziggy Stardust to his controversial period in the '70s as The Thin White Duke. It all comes back to his first character Major Tom though...or at least that's what David would like you to think.
Before Space Oddity set the world on fire, Bowie's first trip into the world of music was actually a more streamlined vaudeville pop star, and the results are very questionable depending on what song you're listening to. Compared to the amazing visuals and sharp songwriting that we would see just a few years later, this entire project feels like amateur hour when stacked against any other Bowie project, as he tries on his straightforward theater side on songs like Rubber Band.
As much as a song like Please Mr. Gravedigger might be a look at where he would go later, it wasn't enough to save the record from bombing on the charts, leading to Bowie rebranding himself in the glam mold and releasing his next album eponymously as a reintroduction to the world. While there might be some good ideas in here, this is what David Bowie would have sounded like if he lived in a world where rock and roll was never invented.
