10 Artists That Will Not Defend Their Own Albums
3. Pinkerton - Weezer
Not every band is really equipped for what happens when they blow up. Now that you have tons of cameras monitoring your every artistic move, it's hard to get back to the vulnerable person that you were when you were struggling to come up with your first songs. Most artists would normally back down, but Rivers Cuomo decided to unpack a lot of his emotions on Pinkerton...and paid a steep price for it.
Coming after grunge, fans did not take kindly to an album like this, being informed by pain just like what the rest of the Seattle scene was already getting stale from a lot of the time. After being voted one of the worst albums of the year, Weezer broke up for a spell only to reunite in the '00s. A funny thing happened in the meantime though, with fans continually coming back around to this album and appreciating the open hearted honesty in a lot of these songs, putting it along the same lines as modern emo albums.
That might be great to see the album's lookout turn around, but Rivers has never really been able to shake that initial hate in the beginning, agreeing with the '90s crowd and chalking Pinkerton up as a hideous record that failed to communicate what he was trying to do. Even if Rivers is trying to run away from that kind of headspace these days, most of us would much rather get another Pinkerton than a Raditude any day of the week.
