10 Awesome Supergroups We Never Got To See

8. Megatera

Over the years, it's clear that the guitarist slot in Megadeth is a bit of a revolving door. Aside from Dave Mustaine playing most of the breakneck leads on his records, there's been a round robin when it comes to his partner in crime, with giants like Marty Friedman and Chris Broderick entering the fold time and time again. While Mustaine's licks tend to be fairly straightforward, there was a good chance that the thrashy side of the band could have become a lot groovier.

Just coming into his own after the Power Metal album, Dimebag Darrell of Pantera was actually one of the first people that Dave called up when auditioning guitar players before going into the album Rust in Peace. Not wanting to pass up the chance of a lifetime, Darrell killed it at the audition, only to balk when told that his brother couldn't come on board as well.

Outside of the obvious tonal similarities, you can really see why Mustaine was pushing for Darrell to come on board, with his weaving of different gypsy jazz scales and fusion styles working well against Mustaine's more technical style. Though you would have definitely needed the Texas Swing of Vinnie Paul to make this iteration work, there might be more in common between Rust in Peace and Cowboys From Hell than you might realize on first glance.
