10 Band Members That Overshadowed The Singer

1. Eddie Van Halen - Van Halen

Having a band member who can outshine someone like David Lee Roth is no easy feat. From the minute that the camera laid eyes on him, Roth was one of the most ideal frontmen that you could ask for in any rock band, with the smooth talking demeanor and keeping the good vibes flowing every time he talked into the microphone. You shouldn't really need that much else in a rock band, but the band is named Van Halen for a damn good reason.

Ever since the band started, Eddie Van Halen was the soul of the group, having some sort of magic in between his fingers every time he played a riff. Though Roth may have been his partner in crime whenever they took to the stage, Eddie was the one that everyone came to see, especially when he tore into his solos and the crowd got a taste of his lead licks while tapping both hands on the fretboard.

Whenever you went to a Van Halen show, the solo section for Ed seemed like a separate spectacle unto itself, where he would take 20 minutes just destroying his guitar and giving us one beautiful piece after another. And with all of the guitarists that have come up in his wake, there's still no one who even comes close to what Eddie did with the guitar. You can try to replicate what Eddie did as much as you can, but there's no replacement for his feel. No matter how many pedals you want to use, the real sound of Eddie was all in his hands.
