10 Band Members Who ABSOLUTELY HATE Each Other
3. Eddie Vedder/Dave Abbruzzese - Pearl Jam
From the time that they hit it big, Pearl Jam was always pretty hesitant of the mainstream. No matter how big they got off of the strength of the album Ten, Eddie Vedder and co. always tried to maintain their artistic integrity rather than cower to what they thought their label wanted. So, when you end up getting a drummer with stars in his eyes, there's bound to be a few disagreements here and there.
While Pearl Jam's drum stool was a bit of a revolving door in the early days, many people remember Dave Abbruzzese as being the face behind the kit throughout the recording of albums like Vs. and Vitalogy. On the surface, there was nothing terribly wrong with Abbruzzese...it was just an enormous personality difference at work. Going into recording Vs., Vedder kept getting more and more skeptical of Dave's macho side, down to his desire to be in a famous band and collection of firearms, the latter of which found its way into the satirical Glorified G.
That's before you even got to the actual playing, where Vedder was particularly harsh on Abbruzzese to give the best performance that he possibly could, leading to frustrated takes like on Rearviewmirror. Halfway through Vitalogy, the time was up, leading to PJ to draft Jack Irons of the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the middle of recording. Though things have looked like they are under control now, these early days must have been like walking on eggshells.
