2. Missy Elliot
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UODX_pYpVxk Melissa 'Missy' Elliot is probably the most successful female rapper there has yet been. She has sold over 30 million albums in the US alone and she is also a five time Grammy winner. Elliot started off in the industry with her old childhood friend Timbaland, writing and producing hits for many acts such as Aaliyah, Jodeci and SWV. She also contributed many backing vocals to tracks by different artists. Soon she was a guest rapper on various tracks and scored a record detail with EastWest records. Her song The Rain was a massive hit from her debut album Supa Dupa Fly. Her next two albums (Da Real World and Miss E .... so addictive) were very successful and generated a lot of hit singles for Missy including Hot Boyz, 4 My People and Get Your Freak On. She followed up with two more albums - Under Construction and This is Not a Test. Under Construction featured the songs Gossip Folks and Work It. It was produced by Timbaland and featured a more Old Skool style. This is Not a Test was felt by Missy to be a rather rushed affair and she wasn't very happy with the album. Two further albums followed - The Cookbook and Respect M E - in 2005 and 2006. Respect M E is a Best of album and The Cookbook was an attempt to be less left field than previous efforts and had several award nominations. Since 2007, Missy has mainly been seen and heard as a collaborator on the songs of just about every rapper and RnB artist. Her seventh album - working again with Timbaland is due out soon. Missy has more than proved her rap superstar credentials. You would be hard pushed to find a harder working woman in rap. She is also known for her fantastic videos which are usually produced by Hype Williams. Her partnership with Timbaland has been remarkably productive and Missy has had more successful hit singles than any other female rap artist that I can remember. She is a rap genius with a real flair for rhyming and she always nearly steals the show whenever she is on a guest appearance in a record. Missy Elliot is a class act all the way.
