One of the most downright rocking albums released this year was that of Wolverhampton two-piece God Damn, the irresistibly infectious Vultures. The album was a nostalgia infused trip through the headier times of rock, most notably glam rock and grunge, with all the same great songwriting elements that were present at the height of both those respective genres popularity.

The epic title track is case and point of this. It utilizes the same quiet-loud dynamics of grunge and the same overblown, over-driven guitars of glam rock, creating a song that hovers somewhere in-between the two. The raw production on the song combined with the husky, drawls of singer and guitarist Thom Edward also help to give it a rough, grunge-type atmosphere that the group willingly embrace.

It is also quite an achievement for a duo to create the sheer scale of sound that they forge on 'Vultures', creating a kinetic energy between them that gives moments like the dramatic outro such intense power.

After gathering a dedicated following in their surrounding areas, this year's Vultures proved that God Damn could replicate their pulsating live shows in the recording studio, creating one of the best debut albums of the year. The brazen title track also sits at the table of the rock pantheon, exhibiting the songwriting quality of seasoned veterans.
