10 Classic Albums That Are Criminally Short
6. Reign in Blood - Slayer
When you think of quick and to the point experiences, thrash metal is not necessarily the first genre that comes to mind. I mean, if Metallica is any indication, the metal community is known to endure a bit of a lengthy song in order to get the full experience out of it. Then again, if you're looking for purely concentrated anger, Slayer made for the most compact experience on Reign in Blood.
Compared to the likes of Megadeth and Metallica, Slayer had their formula down to a science when making their third album, with songs erupting into 1 minute spurts of energy that used the listener as a punching bag throughout its runtime. Even the more lengthy cuts like Raining Blood are showstoppers of heavy metal brilliance, taking the core foundation of thrash and injecting it with the adrenaline of punk rock that teeters on pure insanity.
In fact, this album was actually too short for most cassette standards at the time, with the album just being featured on both sides of the tape for most copies. Then again, no Slayer fan ever felt short changed by that, just throwing it on again to relive the hellscape for one more go around. Although there's a certain standard to success, you have to be on another level when you manage to capture kickass and close up shop with what amounts to half an album's worth of material.
