10 Classic Rock Songs That Were Made Out Of Spite

5. Silly Love Songs - Wings

After the Beatles' tumultuous breakup, the critics started to say that Paul McCartney had begun to go soft. Even when he tried to return to his roots on some hard hitting material like Wings' Venus and Mars, he couldn't shake being the optimistic side of the Lennon/McCartney partnership, with even John Lennon calling songs like My Love a bit too chipper. With all the flak that was thrown his way though, Macca delivered the best "and what about it?" response on Silly Love Songs.

Being the description that Lennon had for most of McCartney's softer songs in the early days, Silly Love Songs is Paul jabbing back at the critics for not liking his softer side. For all of the mellow backing tracks on here, the message from Paul is for these people to get over themselves and admit that it's okay to like love songs. As much as critics might have hated something like My Love, it stood at the top of the charts for a damn good reason.

The writing is actually pretty meta in a way as well, with the chorus being nothing but the phrase "I love you" going on and on until going back into the verses. From a critical standpoint, this is also when some naysayers had to admit defeat, giving it up to Paul for getting one over on them and writing an absolutely fantastic single. Touche, Paul, touche.
