10 Classic Songs That Have Aged Terribly

8. Working Day and Night - Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson's run throughout the '80s is probably going to go down as one of the greatest streaks in pop history. Starting with Off the Wall up until Dangerous, Jacko's penchant for writing some of the most earwormy hooks of the modern age has served as both the blueprint for pop and R&B going forward and the benchmark for musical perfection from top to bottom. Things like that don't happen in a vacuum though. Case in point: Working Day and Night.

When put up against the rest of Jackson's catalog, it's not like there's too much wrong with this track either, being the subtle blends of disco and pop that populates the rest of Off the Wall. However, this is the one instance where Jackson's production goes a little too far into cheesy territory, making the whole track sound like something that's blaring in Studio 54 after a particularly uninspired night.

Sandwiched in between the more uptempo songs on the record like Rock With You, this feels more like a comedown when the real action of the record should be just getting started. Even Jackson's take on the sappy Paul McCartney ballad Girlfriend has aged a bit better compared to this on production value alone. While some artists tend to have good instincts, this is the one moment where that Jacko and Quincy Jones magic wasn't quite there yet.
