AJ McLean was covering up a huge personal secret when filming for The Call. Throughout the music video, he rocked the 'sunglasses at night' look but originally wasn’t supposed to wear them. Obviously, this isn't usually a big deal but his reasoning for the accessory was pretty significant.

It turns out McLean was just starting to experiment with drugs whilst the boy band were at the height of their fame. He was visibly high on cocaine which he had tried for the very first time before filming and needed to cover his eyes up with sunglasses. Thankfully for his sake, the music video didn’t have much lip-syncing or dancing so he was able to pull it off and keep his secret.

And since we’re on the subject of The Call, I need to give an honourable mention to the song’s signature bass sound. It was actually achieved through Howie Dorough’s flatulence. Whilst recording in the booth, Dorough coincidentally farted on the beat AND in the song’s key. Producer Max Martin loved it so much, he turned it into a heavy bass sound.

How ironic that all these secrets and lies come together in a song that’s literally about cheating.
