10 Extreme Rock Albums That Will Blow Your Mind

9. Man Man - Six Demon Bag

A personal favourite. Man Man are a quite extraordinary bunch of musicians, led by Honus Honus (aka Ryan Kattner), whose vocal power and prowess can be compared favourably with Mike Patton.

The group represent that ultimate rarity – supremely talented players who can (and will) push the envelope in all directions, but who package even their wildest flights with so many hooks and wonderful melodies that the listener is never alienated. Six Demon Bag is the group's second album. Released in 2006, it features a more polished production than their debut, and serves up some wonderful musical concoctions.

The album's title is apparently a reference to a throwaway line in cult film, Big Trouble In Little China (John Carpenter, 2006), and indeed much of that film's playful mythologizing and colourful adventure shines through this record.

You'll hear creeping thrash metal, off-kilter sea-shanties, mercurial lyrics and carnival fancies. Six Demon Bag was critically well-received upon its release, being championed by Pitchfork among others. This is a band you can't measure by commercial success, however, and we are very fortunate to have them.
