10 Great Rock Bands Who Never Released An Album
2. Lyme & Cybelle
Warren Zevon would go on to enjoy a long and fruitful solo career, perhaps topped by the success of his song, Werewolves Of London (which hit No 21 in the US charts and was later covered by The Grateful Dead) but how many know of Lyme & Cybelle, the folk-rock duo with whom Zevon laid down his first commercial recording?
Zevon and Violet Santangelo, who formed the other half of the pair, met in the mid-'60s while at high school in Los Angeles and, driven by shared musical interests, soon began to perform together, attracting the attention of White Whale Records, through whom they released two singles. The duo's moniker derived from a French film, Sundays and Cybele (directed by Serge Bourguignon).
The first of these singles, Follow Me (1966), was produced by Bones Howe (later famed for work with such talents as The 5th Dimension and Tom Waits). Howe is on record as stating that, in his opinion, Follow Me is a good contender for the first psychedelic pop record. The duo's follow-up single, however, failed to win any significant commercial success and the two parted, somewhat acrimoniously.
