10 Great Rock Bands Who Never Released An Album
1. Q Lazzarus
You'll find many fascinating stories on this list, but perhaps none more so than that of Q Lazzarus, aka Diane Luckey, the mysterious figure who left behind a sole recording, the intriguingly beautiful Goodbye Horses. As to the history of Q Lazzarus, her backstory reads like a fictional novel. Whilst everything must be taken with a pinch of salt, the received facts are that she was born in New Jersey, married young and subsequently fled that abusive relationship to become a nanny for an English man named 'Swan'.
Luckey then became a taxi driver, where one of her fares, director Jonathan Demme (who would later direct Silence Of The Lambs) heard Q Lazzarus' demo playing in the cab. With Demme's support, Goodbye Horses was heard by the nation, featuring as it did in several films, including Demme's own Silence Of The Lambs (as the backdrop to one of the film's most memorable scenes).
Diane Luckey's band disbanded in the early '90s, and Luckey herself disappeared from the public radar (if she had ever truly been on it). Nearly thirty years later, dedicated fans alleged to have finally tracked down Luckey, who was apparently working as a bus driver on Staten Island. This was later confirmed by Luckey herself, or someone claiming to be Luckey, via email exchanges with writers from Dazed Magazine. We might never have a definite answer as to the current status and whereabouts of Luckey, but thankfully we will always have Goodbye Horses to enjoy.
