10 Greatest Beatles Classic Rock Songs

1. Come Together

This swampy, Lennon penned blues groove gets its title from the writer Timothy Leary who was running for Governor of California and wanted John to compose a campaign song. Unable to come up with anything suitable, he kept the title for this track’s dark nonsense words

The song started out as a more uptempo rocker but the group slowed it down, and Paul added one of his best bass lines, to make the song more distinctive and original.

Nevertheless, the similarity to Chuck Berry’s You Can’t Catch Me was enough for Lennon to face a law suit. Maybe John should have cut the lyrical reference to “old flat top,” seemingly cribbed from Berry’s song.

Lennon eventually had to agree to cover three Berry tracks on future solo albums. He had the last laugh with Come Together having stood the test of time as a peerless classic rock anthem.
