10 Greatest Classic Rock Albums Of The 1970s
1. Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell
Even though there are genuinely dozens of potential contenders for this list, there could only ever be one true winner. Released in 1977 and written by one of the best songwriters of all time, Jim Steinman, ‘Bat Out of Hell’ was the album that elevated Meat Loaf to levels of fame which have rarely been reached before or since.
Still to this day, ‘Bat Out of Hell’ remains one of the biggest selling debut studio albums ever, having received 14 platinum certifications in the United States alone. In total, this album has sold over 43 million copies worldwide and held a constant position in the UK weekly album chart consecutively for over 10 years (second only to ABBA’s greatest hits).
Despite the original version of ‘Bat Out of Hell’ only including seven songs, Meat Loaf and Steinman ensured that all seven of these songs were clear cut classics. Some of the featured songs included ‘Paradise by the Dashboard Light’, ‘You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth’, ‘Heaven Can Wait’ and the iconic title track.
With all this considered, ‘Bat Out of Hell’ simply has to be named the best classic rock of the 1970s, and potentially the best classic rock album ever made.
