10 Greatest Comebacks In Rock History
3. Death Magnetic - Metallica
By the mid '00s, Metallica fans hadn't seen their favorite band in full force since the early '90s.
While the Black Album showed them reach their fullest potential as a hard rock band, the next few years brought on a slew of new sounds that didn't belong anywhere near a Metallica release, from more mainstream singles to ear-piercing messes on St. Anger. Just when the band seemed down for the count, Death Magnetic came to fruition sounding like thrash being reborn.
After decades of trying to ride the wave of fame, this entire project was Metallica back to sounding like their original metal selves, with songs like "All Nightmare Long" being balanced on the other side with ballads like "The Day That Never Comes." Across every song on this record, each era of the band is represented, even down to a continuation of the Unforgiven saga on "The Unforgiven III."
It's not necessarily perfect, with much of the songs running a bit long and being shoddily produced, but the original germ of Metallica's roots shines through any type of lackluster sound quality. Death Magnetic isn't necessarily one of the best records in Metallica's catalog, but it showed that the thrash metal titans were at least learning from their previous sins.
