10 Greatest Fleetwood Mac Albums
6. Then Play On (1968)
Following the samey sounds of Mr. Wonderful, Mac's third studio album saw the band come roaring back and prove they were certainly for real. Released in September 1968, everything from the album name (which was borrowed from the Shakespeare quote: "If music be the food of love, play on") to the harmony between the incoming Danny Kirwan and Peter Green, everything in Then Play On just has a much more cohesive and purposeful feel about it.
The album marks an important point in Fleetwood Mac beginning to embrace their ability to blur and blend between different types of rock, with the band's established Blues Rock being injected with various new exotic rhythms and more psychedelic elements.
And the results of this more commercial approach were equally as telling, with the album nestling itself at a peak position of number six in the UK charts, even if critical reception to it upon release was fairly lukewarm to begin with.
Then Play On represents an important step in the history of Fleetwood Mac as a group of artists who broke the boundaries of the Atlantic, and remains an album that is more and more appreciated the longer time goes on.
