10 Greatest Sequel Songs In Rock Music History

1. Ashes to Ashes - David Bowie

For all of the many hats that David Bowie has worn throughout the years, it doesn't make any sense for him to look backwards that often. This was the man who was known to casually reinvent rock and roll on every single album, so it didn't even feel like he had time for getting nostalgic any time soon. As he started to wrap up the Berlin era of his career and move on to dance music on Scary Monsters, he found himself checking in on his first character on Ashes to Ashes.

From the raw sound of this record, Bowie was definitely going for an otherworldly vibe, using a dance groove underneath some of the more dramatic vocals that he had put down on a record in some time. Once we get to the chorus and the title of the song drops, we also get to hear from Major Tom for the first time since his disappearance in Space Oddity.

In another life, our favorite space voyager has turned into a junkie and may or may not be on a dangerous path. Considering this was also a time when Bowie was starting to wean off the drugs, this feels like him reaching out to his old characters and trying to give them some sort of redemption arc as well. While we eventually waited another 30 years to see Major Tom's fate in the music video for Blackstar, things were looking pretty grim ever since he cut off his transmission with us back in 1969.
