10 Greatest Unplugged Albums In Rock History
4. MTV Unplugged - Nirvana
The entire concept of the MTV Unplugged show has been a bit hit and miss depending on the artist. Although there have been many amazing performances from the likes of Pearl Jam and Eric Clapton on the program, was there anyone necessarily asking for a stripped down performance from LL Cool J? Even though trends can come and go for the medium, the TV show stumbled into legendary status once the kings of Seattle stepped into that New York studio.
Leading up to their performance, Kurt Cobain was trying to make a statement with this gig, saying that he hated being known more as a spokesman for his generation rather than an actual songwriter. Choosing to shy away from their normal hits, most of this performance is a much more intimate affair, with Kurt dusting off some covers from the likes of David Bowie and the Meat Puppets while breathing new life into songs like Something in the Way and Dumb.
This wasn't just any old gig made for TV though. For Kurt, the whole program feels like him shredding his soul open, especially when you get to the end of Where Did You Sleep Last Night and that slight moment where you can practically see his soul leave his body through his eyes. Considering this man wouldn't be alive just a few months later, this works as a great creative epitaph for what became the biggest rock star of the '90s.
