10 Hard Rock Albums Saved By One Song
1. One - Metallica
For most Metallica fans, the band's '80s output is where all the quality material is. From the band's punk-tinged debut Kill Em All to the pure metal bombast of Master of Puppets, each record seemed like the next logical stepping stone for the band to conquer the music world. However, things get a bit strange when discussing the album And Justice For All.
While the actual songs on Justice are fine by metal standards, the overly long arrangements combined with the lack of bass presence in the mix makes it the most blemished recording in the band's classic catalog. On the other hand, not even the most lacklustre production could stop "One" from taking the masses by storm. Being the first Metallica song to get the full video treatment, "One" might be the best in the band's classic output, with the beautiful ballad sections of the songs interwoven with some of the heaviest lyrics and riffs that they would ever commit to tape.
Though it may not contain a full chorus, every part of this song is a hook from James Hetfield's gutteral growls in the breakdown to the singable tapping solo from Kirk Hammett. And Justice For All may be a bit of a flawed album, but the power behind "One" is pretty much bulletproof.
