10 Hard Rock Bands Who Had TWO Great Singers
7. Mick Jones/Joe Strummer - The Clash
When the Clash broke onto the London punk scene in the late 70's, it was a wake up call for the next generation of rockers. Rock bands of old were seeming to run out of gas, but each Clash show seemed like a furious unleashing of energy that signaled the dawn of rock's new regime.
One of the biggest strengths to the Clash's music was the interesting dichotomy of singers within the group. The crux of the songwriting in the group was a partnership between Mick Jones and Joe Strummer, but the way they traded off on the band's songs was always fun to see.
It's easy to peg Strummer as the political songwriter and Jones as the pop singer, but the actual execution extends much greater than that. For every Strummer condemnation like "Rock the Casbah," there's a song like "I Fought the Law" to get the audience moving. While Jones may get flak for his catchy hooks on "Train In Vain," songs like "Lost In the Supermarket" hit a much more potent nerve.
The two frontmen dynamic gave even greater poignancy to the Clash's self-proclamation as the Only Band That Matters. It's a bold title, but given both singers' strengths, did you really need anything else?
