10 Hard Rock Songs That Were Supposed To Be Classics (But Tanked)

9. Sappy - Nirvana

Ever since Kurt Cobain's death, the alternative community has liked to put a bit of a halo across every single piece of Nirvana's back catalog. No matter what type of genre they put their hands on, fans have lauded over each nook and cranny of these Seattle icons' repertoire so long as it had Cobain featured on the track. If there were any justice though, Sappy would have been released and mentioned in the same breath as something like Heart Shaped Box.

Saved for the box sets and B-sides collections, this track would have been a major hit for Nirvana had they been to get a proper recording of it finished. As far as the melody is concerned, this is one of the most straightforward choruses that Kurt ever wrote, along with some fairly progressive lyrics for the time. Compared to the casual misogyny that you'd find in older classic rock songs, Cobain paints a sad picture of a woman not being able to break out of her housewife role, remaining a prisoner in her own home.

Along with the amazing subject matter is the arrangement, which hits all of the great Nirvana trademarks from the soft verse and loud chorus to the sounds of Kurt almost strangling his guitar for the solo. For as much as something like Smells Like Teen Spirit is rightly celebrated for changing the world of rock music, this is the song for every seasoned Nirvana fan.
