10 Highly Underrated Rock Music Drummers

8. Phil Taylor - Motörhead

Not to be confused with the darts player of the same name, Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor wasn't Motörhead's first dummer or even their longest-tenured, but he was by far-and-away their most successful.

Alongside Lemmy and "Fast" Eddie Clarke, Taylor was one third of the band's "classic" line-up from 1976 to 1982. He played on the group's very well-received debut album and ended up on nine of their studio releases and two of their most famous live records.

Much like his comrades, Taylor liked to play hard and fast. Very fast. He slapped the skins with the force of a neutron bomb, helping carry the band to the status of one of the loudest in the entire world.

On the rare occasion that the band decided to make use of rhythm, Taylor was able to keep time with the best of them, as he proved on the track Stay Clean from the Overkill album.

Sadly, the Philthy Animal passed away in 2015 at the age of 61, the first of the classic line-up to go. Still, there is some comfort to be taken in knowing that they're all up in Heaven right now, probably making an almighty racket.
