10 Iconic Rock Stars Who Guested On Pop Songs
9. Love Song - Prince
Of all the many hats that Madonna has worn throughout her career, her track record in the world of rock hasn't been exactly flawless. The material girl has definitely been known to reinvent herself time and time again, but the kind of industrial style of rock that she channeled on her album American Life just didn't seem to work very well. When she first dipped her toes into that territory, Love Song looked at least promising.
Granted, this is far from the kind of heaviness than someone like Metallica or even Zeppelin would have dared to touch. Since this is on the same record as Like a Prayer, there's a lot more glossiness in the production than most rockers are used to. No, the real thunder that ties this song together comes in the guitar work, which interjects a different shade of purple into Madonna's sonic palette.
Going undercover in the back of this song is Prince, sprinkling in some of his signature guitar licks that feels almost reminiscent of the kind of the stuff that he did back on his classic '80s albums like the solo on Let's Go Crazy. If anything, this just gives you a good glimpse into what kind of musician we had on our hands with Prince. He may have been a bit on the eccentric side, but this is absolutely the guy that would eventually deliver that kind of performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
