10 Incredible Blur Songs You’ve Probably Never Heard
1. The Puritan
One off, comeback single Under The Westway was released the very same month as Blur’s comprehensive box set 21 so it made sense for the former to be included in the latter.
It made less sense to exclude the single’s B-side from the box set. Apparently fans willing to fork out for lavishly packaged multi disc collections were only entitled to the one new track, not both.
So The Puritan remains one of Blur’s most obscure studio recordings. The song is a sonic stew of synths and drum machines very different to Under The Westway’s wistful piano ballad. It’s reminiscent of the experimental, glitchy productions on their 13 album or the more lovely moments on Think Tank.
There’s a warmth to the backing vocals that run through the verses, deep in the mix. They contrast with the woozy, jittery backing track. You couldn’t call it classic Blur but it’s distinctly Damon Albarn and could just as easily be a Gorillaz outtake.
