10 Legendary Bands That Were Actually Side Projects

1. Stone Sour

Of all the newer acts in rock and roll, Corey Taylor could practically be considered a virtuoso behind the mic. While he might not be the first choice for someone to sing something like Steve Perry, his brilliant use of singing and screaming with Slipknot has made him one of the most in demand rock stars in the world, especially when you get him talking about people like Kanye. If you were to ask him about his roots though, Slipknot may be considered a side project when you look at all that went into Stone Sour.

Before Slipknot asked Corey to join, he had already been making a name for himself in the Iowa scene with his old friends, going for something that was more in line with post grunge that it was with the more thrashy side of metal. Once Slipknot hit it big though, things started to change and Corey had to leave his old band behind…for now. Having an opportunity to get out his other creative energy, Corey kept Stone Sour going almost concurrently with Slipknot, which he was able to do fairly well considering how many Slipknot fans didn’t know what the guys looked like behind their masks in the early days.

As the Knot became more friendly with the public though, Stone Sour became a much stronger act for Corey to manage, taking the same intensity that he brought to Slipknot and having a more radio rock flair to it than what you would hear on the mainline records from him. It might be a hard sell to get fairweather rock fans to listen to Pulse of the Maggots, but something like Through Glass will go down a lot easier.
