10 Metal Bands Who Made 5 Great Albums In A Row

1. Slayer

One of the indisputable greatest metal bands of all time, Slayer’s legacy is ingrained not just in their own genre but the entirety of pop-culture. The band are synonymous with all things heavy, fast and demonic, and if you’ve ever worn a Slayer top at a rock gig or festival, you’ll know how much everyone loves to shout SLAYARGHHHHHHH at you. They’re the GOATS of thrash metal and here is their classic album run.

It starts with Show No Mercy (1983), and Hell Awaits (1985), two great heavy metal albums that unfortunately only pale when compared to the genre-defining three-album run the band would then embark on.

1986s Reign In Blood is Slayer’s masterpiece and an album so disgusting that major labels didn’t want to release it. It’s played with ruthless speed and effortless control: it wants to pulverise you. The record whirs, antagonises and leaves you in a haze.

Following up that classic would be tricky for most, but Slayer on South of Heaven (1988) managed to combine their splattered thrash with a slower Sabbath style grind to maintain unadulterated heaviness. Then Seasons in the Abyss (1990) came and built on this as the band found their groove and played it to perfection.
