10 More Rock Songs That Insulted Other Musicians
4. Led Clones - Gary Moore
Northern Irish guitarist Gary Moore is best known for his work with Thin Lizzy and the song Parisienne Walkways with Phil Lynott on vocals.
He teamed up with another famous singer to bring his thoughts on the state of modern rock music to life. With Ozzy Osbourne on co-lead vocals, Moore put out Led Clones as part of his 1989 album After the War.
Led Clones is an attack on the bands Moore perceived as copying the success of Led Zeppelin; groups like Whitesnake and Kingdom Come who borrowed signature elements from the band and passed them off as original.
The song gets very meta when it starts borrowing from Zeppelin's discography itself. That part when the singing comes in has more than a hint of Kashmir to it and that is not an accident.
You could even count Osbourne's inclusion as a piece of commentary - both Zeppelin and Sabbath are credited with helping to start the heavy metal movement in earnest.
In reality, it's hard to find any hard rock or heavy metal band who don't take some inspiration from Led Zep. According to Gary though, this was a cardinal sin.
