10 Most Controversial Songs In Rock History

4. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

It's about time that everyone get used to the fact that we will be hearing Stairway to Heaven until the sun burns out of the sky. Being one of the greatest journeys in the history of rock and roll, there are a good contingency of rock fans who would gladly go their entire life without hearing the opening acoustic chords ever again. Then again, maybe Led Zeppelin were onto something a bit more macabre in the lyrical department.

Despite literally being a song about the journey to the paradise in the sky, many astute music critics started to come down on Zeppelin for promoting Satanist practices. Though you could probably infer this kind of thing through Jimmy Page's fixation with the occult, the higher ups began to question what the song sounded like if you played it backwards, with the lyrics roughly translating to "Here's to my Sweet Satan."

To this day, Robert Plant has always refuted this idea, always questioning why anyone would even have the idea of playing the record backwards in the first place. To be fair, this might be one of the most ironic forms of critiques ever made. As much as they come down on Zeppelin here for Satanic works, isn't the reverse form of a stairway to heaven a slip way down to Hell?
