10 Most Over-Hated Rock Albums Of All Time
2. St. Anger - Metallica
Metallica records tend to be either hit or miss with most fans. Given the band's tendency to go in different directions with each release, the changes they put into their work will leave fans either elated or absolutely gutted as a result. Though many fans have mixed feelings on albums like Load or Death Magnetic, almost every fan of Metallica has had some nonflattering things to say about St. Anger.
From the horrible mixing to the poorly-thought-out riffs to the ear-piercing snare drum, it seems that the band took nearly every wrong step with this release. Even with all its questionable sonic avenues, the album has actually aged a bit better than you may give it credit for. Whereas most of the band's records were focused on sounding badass, this record has a lot of emotion on it brought on by the band's struggles in therapy.
Instead of sounding like your average metal throwdown, this record feels like you're looking in on the band during those dark times as they struggle to make sense of their situations. Sure, it may not have as much concentrated kickass as their earlier work, but there's still a lot to unpack on this record that is well worth your time. You may find better performances on other records, but St. Anger shows Metallica in their most raw state of mind.
