10 Most Overhated Bands In Rock

6. Green Day

Green Day are known now as one of the biggest rock bands in the world. With classics like "American Idiot" and "Basket Case" under their belt, it seems that their legacy as one of the greatest bands in the world should be all but secure. At the same time, Green Day have gotten hate relentlessly persecuted for being one of punk music's biggest sellouts.

Originally coming from the punk squats of California, the band's initial fanbase was absolutely furious when they signed to a major label for their 3rd effort Dookie. While the rest of the world was chanting along to the band's tuneful punk rock, the rest of their hometown were criticizing them for using their beginnings as just a stepping stone.

Though the band did end up getting more poppy after coming to a major label, this was also when they were writing some of their greatest songs. The band singlehandedly jumpstarted the pop punk movement, with bands like Paramore, Blink 182, and Sum 41 quickly following suit. The band even managed to transcend the punk label altogether with American Idiot, where they officially became mainstream rock giants. Even if they still get hate as sell-outs, Green Day have established themselves as a band that does whatever the hell they want to do, which is as rock and roll as it gets.
