10 Most Trippy Albums Of All Time
2. Master Of Reality - Black Sabbath
When it comes to stoner rock, there's no set band that you could say invented the genre. Even with several different bands being put in the genre over the years, the only album that you could argue gave birth to the more sludgy sound was Master of Reality.
Appropriately starting with a cough from Tony Iommi, the album takes off with some of the heaviest riffs to come from the golden age of metal. In an attempt to get an even fatter sound, Tony Iommi tuned his guitar incredibly low for this record, which turned his riffs into power chord juggernauts on songs like "Children of the Grave."
Even before the Sleeps and Monster Magnets of the world began, this record embodies everything that stoner rock would become, with meaty grooves that stay at a consistent tempo across its runtime. You can practically smell the secondhand weed smoke coming off of some of these tracks. With the accompanying sonic haze, there is really no question as to what the opening track "Sweet Leaf" is actually about. While setting the benchmark for heavy metal music, Black Sabbath's sonic detours on this record led to them inventing yet another classic metal genre from the ground up.
